The brick portion of this house was built in 1854 by Avery Ward Adams, a brick mason from New Braintree, Massachusetts. During the Civil War, the house was rented by the Charles and Christina Koch family. Capt. Charles Koch died in the house in August 1863.

The house was purchased in 1868, by James Cleary, a wood and fuel dealer.

In 1874, the renter Frank D. Kent, a carpenter/contractor, traded his labor for rent, and built the frame portion of the structure.
