The building is mainly Italianate style, with a roof and dome of the French Second Empire style. It is mainly constructed from buff colored mankato stone from a nearby quarry. It has a 4-story tower. In 1905 heat, light, and plumbing systems were modernized. In 1963 and 1967 the interior was remodeled with A.J. Ross as the architect and A.J.Hoffman as the contractor.

The Minnesota Historical Society holds many of the historical records, such as naturalization and civil and criminal case files, from this courthouse. State laws restrict some access to records. The Minnesota State BAR association published The First 100 Years— , which holds a more complete history of the judicial history on both the local and state levels.
